World Smile Day is celebrated every year on the first Friday in October. This year it is celebrated on October 7.
The day was created by commercial artist Harvey Ball of Worcester, Massachusetts in response to his creation of the smiley face. Harvey created the Smiley Face we all know today in 1963. The first World Smile Day was celebrated in 1999.
Harvey thought everyone should dedicate one day a year to smiles and acts of kindness around the world. After Harvey died in 2001, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was created to honor his name and memory.
