iPhone SE 4 will be a toned-down iPhone 14, series not cancelled

In January of this year, rumours began to surface that Apple was shutting down its “affordable” iPhone SE lineup. Two months later, the same source claimed the exact opposite. A new report suggests that Apple won’t be killing off its iPhone SE series just yet. In fact, the upcoming iPhone SE will be more or less the same as the iPhone 14. The device is said to have a 6.1-inch display, which is the same as the iPhone 14.

The new generation iPhone SE

The news comes courtesy of claims by well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that Apple hasn’t killed its iPhone SE yet. The source also claims that the upcoming iPhone SE will be built on the iPhone 14 chassis, meaning the device will have a 6.1-inch OLED display. The panel for the upcoming iPhone SE could be manufactured by BOE.

Additionally, the upcoming iPhone SE will be the first iPhone to feature Apple’s custom-made 5G baseband chip, which is said to be manufactured using a 4nm process. The new chip will probably only support Sub6 5G, not mmWave. From the looks of it, the iPhone SE could serve as a test bed for Apple for the new chip. The company may be trying to test the chip for issues with a relatively cheaper model rather than using it directly in its flagship line.

It remains to be seen when Apple will start incorporating the 5G baseband chip into its mainstream models, as the shortcomings (mmWave and satellite compatibility issues) have yet to be worked out.

As for the upcoming iPhone SE, production of the device is said to begin in the first half of 2024, so there’s still plenty of time left for Apple to turn things around. It’s also worth noting that the device’s launch is still roughly a year away, so a lot can change before the device hits commercial shelves.
