Amazon Launches Prime Gaming Service in India

The gaming service will be bundled with Amazon Prime and will also give subscribers access to a range of mobile, PC and Mac games.

Prime Gaming currently offers games like Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, FIFA 23, League of Legends, DeathLoop and more.

The quiet launch comes weeks after it was first reported that the company was looking to launch the gaming service in the country

Amid reports that Amazon is looking to launch Prime Gaming in India, the e-commerce major has now quietly debuted the subscription service in the country.

The gaming service will come bundled with Amazon Prime and will also give subscribers access to a range of mobile, PC and Mac games. In addition, users will also gain access to in-game loot such as weapons, characters, skins, power-ups, upgrades and more.

According to information available on the website, the service currently offers games such as Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0, FIFA 23, League of Legends, DeathLoop and others.

The gaming service is available to Prime subscribers whose subscription costs around INR 1,499 for an annual package.

Interestingly, the launch comes almost weeks after it was first reported that the company was looking to launch the service in the country. At the time, the service’s website was reported to be live in the country, but when users logged in to check, the platform went offline.

After much hype, the gaming service has finally made its way to India. The launch comes two years after Amazon introduced its mobile gaming service in India, which was largely limited to free in-game content such as collectible characters, upgrades, among others.

The move to launch its gaming platform in the country comes at a tumultuous time for the e-commerce major. Amazon has closed up to three verticals in recent weeks. The startup has shut down its edtech platform, pilot food delivery service and wholesale e-commerce businesses in the country.

Eye On The Game Space

The launch in India comes as the tech major consolidates its operations and looks to grab a slice of the growing Indian gaming space. With the vast resources and titles it already has at its disposal, this move could allow Amazon to quickly expand into the Indian market and grab a chunk of space.

Amazon’s announcement comes weeks after oil and telecom conglomerate Reliance Jio launched a beta version of its new cloud gaming platform JioGamesCloud on the JioGames app.

The industry has seen a lot of growth in the past few years due to the explosion of online gamers in the country and the growing appetite of online gamers. The space has also been revitalized by the introduction of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), which has also led to a boom in the online gaming industry.

Inc42 estimates that the number of online gamers in the country will grow to 657 million users in 2025 from 481 million in 2022. The growth has been largely driven by online mobile gaming, which has spawned several unicorns such as Nazara Technologies, Games24x7, Dream11, Mobile Premier League for the last few years.

As the space evolves and new players enter the industry, the Indian online gaming market continues to grow and is projected to grow to $5 billion by 2025.
